Your fish require the correct diet year round to ensure that they achieve impressive growth, great colour and remain healthy. If you're new to fish keeping then the array of foods and treats available can be confusing. At Krafty Koi we can help you to make the right choices for your fish.
Koi Food
It is best to choose a food formulated specifically for your koi. These foods have been developed following years of research and testing and so feature the right combination of nutrients. Your koi's requirements at anytime will largely be dependent on the water temperature of your pond. As the water temperature drops your fish's metabolisms begin to slow and as such they will require less food. This is a great rule of thumb to take away. In the warmer months look to feed your koi 2 to 4 times each day but only provide as much food as they will eat in a few minutes. Remove any uneaten food immediately otherwise it will soon rot and begin to pollute the water. This process leads to the release of harmful compounds that could have a detrimental impact on the health of your fish.
Pond Flakes, Pond Pellets and Pond Sticks
If you keep fish other than koi, then the right type of food will depend on their species and size. Smaller fish, other than bottom-feeders, are best fed with pond flakes. Medium sized and larger fish should be given floating pond pellets or pond sticks. As with koi food, only provide your fish with quantities that they will consume in a few minutes.
Pond Sinking Pellets
Bottom feeding coldwater fish such as tench and sterlets should be fed with. If you keep sturgeon then choose a proprietary sturgeon food which is rich in fish meal protein rather than vegetable protein. Foods high in vegetable protein are unsuitable for sturgeon and could cause them to suffer from malnutrition.
Variety Pond Food
If your pond is stocked with a variety of fish or fish of different sizes then could be your perfect solution. Variety foods will mean that you don't have to invest in several different types of fish food. Variety pond foods can feature a mixture of flakes and pellets to suit different sizes of fish or mixes for medium to large fish wish offer them a varied diet.
Winter Pond Food
In the colder months you should switch to. This features easily digestible wheatgerm. If your pond is planted then your fish may be able to gain all the winter nutrition they need from the water and so will require minimal or no additional feed. Test their appetites by sprinkling a little winter food on the pond. If they show no interest then don't add any more food to the water as this will be ignored and will then impact water quality. You should stop feeding your fish altogether if the water temperature drops below 10 degrees.
