Honouring koi in LEGO®!

LEGO is the most successful toy in the world. There can be few children who haven’t played with those little coloured bricks. Many adults sneakily love them too! Lego has evolved over the years and now a new innovation is being trialled.

LEGO ® FORMA has landed

LEGO ® FORMA is currently the subject of a . Consumers will try and evaluate the new concept which can then be developed and scaled. LEGO ® FORMA is designed to appeal to a new audience and as such represents a risk. It is aimed at adults and will be tested by over 1000 people. This incarnation of LEGO features kits to create interpretations of animals and plants. Better still, foil sheets enable crafters to get really artistic.

LEGO ® gets creative

More a creative endeavour than a toy, LEGO ® FORMA is about building a piece to display not something to be undone later. Each figure should take a couple of hours to build and will help adults to rediscover their childhood love of crafting.

At this point you are probably wondering what all this has to do with fish!

A fish to kickstart the range

We are bringing you this story because the first model in the range is a fish. Four foil skins have been designed and so the finished piece can be a variety of colours or species. Created as a limited short-run batch only, the pilot launch is an essentially an experiment during which LEGO ® can learn whether there is an appetite and market for the product.

If you have been looking for a creative outlet and one which reflects your appreciation of koi, this could be it! The images which LEGO have released of the completed fish certainly make their new product look rather spectacular and it is interesting that they have chosen a fish to kick things off.

Colours and patterns

The four foils include a distinctive orange and black koi pattern but there are further foils which enable you to create a shark and black and white fish. The model is mechanical and designed to exhibit realistic movements and is advertised as an attractive decorative piece to display in your home. There are 294 pieces to assemble and the finished fish is 11 inches long. Apparently the designer of the fish is left handed and this has resulted in the handle which operates the mechanical movement suiting left-handers.

Launched via Indiegogo

The models were initially promoted via Indiegogo, a platform which was established to forward innovative ideas and to bring them to life. An entrepreneur or enterprise can raise funds with a crowdfunding campaign, generate their first customers and early sales plus receive real-time feedback. The Indiegogo campaign for LEGO ® FORMA ended in November 2018 and the first models will be shipped to testers in the next two to three months.

Let’s hope that the project is a huge success and that the models become available to buy in stores or online. The Indiegogo promotion resulted in every available fish being sold which would suggest that there is a good market for this new idea.
